downtown?” The stories he remembers covering: “The capture and trial of Ted Bundy. [News director] Bob Jordan wanted us to be all over that. It was a national story based in Florida. That story took off for several reasons. Florida had cameras in the courts. This shocking murder in Tallahassee became this monster national story.” On the connections he made: “Bob Jordan promised the owners of Channel9 he would figure out how to make it No.1. His mantra was he was going to win with quality. He hired Bob Opsahl. He did what he said he was going to do. He was just a tremendous influence on my life.” Where did you hang out? “Downtown was active back then. The hot place was Rosie O’Grady’s. They had nickel beer. The first time I turned on the TV, he was doing a hurricane prep shot from a Home Depot. I had no idea I was taking that guy’s job.”
