By Amy Niedzielka
Tickets available for Nomo's start By AMY NIEDZIELKA Herald Sports Writer LOS ANGELES - Marlins fans won't get to see Dodgers star Hideo Nomo on television tonight in the Marlins-Dodgers game, but they will be able to see him in person at Joe Robbie Stadium Thursday. Nomo is scheduled to start Thursday's 7:05 p.m. game NOTEBOOK against the Marlins. He also is starting tonight's 11:05 p.m. game, part of ABC's Baseball Night in America package, but the Marlins-Dodgers will not be televised in South Florida. Instead, the Mets game at 8:05 p.m. will be aired. There still thousands of tickets a available to Thursday's game, Marlins media relations director Chuck Pool said Friday. But the Marlins have already received dozens of inquiries. "There's a lot of interest but right now - it's not in danger of selling out," Pool said. "Of course, the game's still a week away. I'm sure he will have an impact on the crowd that night." The Marlins are not looking forward to seeing Nomo as much as you might be. "Is it interesting?" first baseman Greg Colbrunn said. "He's leading the league in strikeouts; I don't think that's too interesting. He's 6-1 with a 1.99 ERA, throwing the ball extremely well. It would be nice to miss him." Veres returns Marlins reliever Randy Veres rejoined the Marlins Thursday after two of the most excruciatingly painful days in his life. Veres underwent a procedure Tuesday to have kidney stones removed, but it was partially successful. He passed one stone but didn't pass the other. 'Is it interesting? He's leading the league in strikeouts; I don't think that's too interesting.' MARLINS 1B GREG COLBRUNN on prospect of facing Hideo Nomo He made two trips to the emergency room Wednesday because of the pain. "I feel worse (than before)," Veres said. "I've never gone through so much pain in my life." He will not be available to pitch again until he passes the second stone. "There's no way he can go out there right now," Marlins pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "He's been through enough in the past four or five days." Said Veres: "I don't know when this thing is going to pass. It might be tonight or tomorrow. I want to keep in decent shape by throwing so (when it passes) I can be ready to go in a couple days. I've already taken four days off from throwing." Going batty The bat Jeff Conine sent to the Hall of Fame after being named the All game MVP is 35 inches and weighs 35 ounces. It's a Louisville Slugger with a Walker finish. It's a Jeff Conine signature bat, but it's not available in stores. Two threats in one Marlins starter Chris Hammond went 3-for-4 Thursday, which raised his batting average to .321 (9 for 28) and gave him a .409 average (9 for 22) in his last nine starts. His first at-bat was a successful sacrifice bunt. "*If they trade him, they better get two players in return a - pitcher and a hitter," quipped /Marlins broadcaster Joe Angel. Special delivery All Conine did Tuesday night was hit a home run and win an All-Star game. That was nothing compared to what catching instructor Joe Breeden's wife did. Just about the time the All-Star game was beginning, Deidre Breeden went into labor. At 2 a.m., about the time Conine was celebrating his All-Star game MVP award by sharing room service with his wife in his hotel room, Deidre gave birth to the couple's second daughter, Anastasia. Breeden remained with his wife in Newport News, Va., missing Thursday's and Friday's games.
