Channel 9 hires news director By The Star's staff rian Bracco, the news B in director Columbus, at Ohio, WTVN-TV will become news director of KMBC, Channel 9. Bracco replaces Michael Sullivan, who resigned as Channel 9 news director in December. Channel 9 newscast ratings generally were third among the three network affiliates during Sullivan's 2½-year tenure. In the October and November ratings, Arbitron and Nielsen reported that Channel 9 was in last place at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. "Brian is an exceptional journalist, he has great people skills and he's a winner," said Paul Dinovitz, general manager of Channel 9. Bracco, who starts work Monday, said in a telephone interview that he hadn't made specific plans for changes at Channel 9. "I'm going to come in, roll up my sleeves and go to work," he said. Bracco, 35, worked as an intern at KCMO, now KCTV, Channel 5, while he was attending the University of Kansas in the early 1970s. A native of Chicago, Bracco started his professional career in 1973 as a reporter at KTVH-TV, now KWCH, in Wichita. In late 1973 he started reporting for WTVN-TV in Columbus, where he worked as anchor, producer, managing editor and assistant news editor. In 1983 he became news director of WBRC-TV in Birmingham, Ala. Bracco returned to Columbus in 1985 to become WTVN news director. Bracco is married and has two children.
