religious thousand ninety-fourth. Death of Hon. Dugald Stewart. The sad intelligence has reached us of the death of Hon. Dugald Stewart, of Middlebury, State Auditor of Ac counts, which occurred at his residence at 6 o'clock last Wednesday morn ing. Mr. Stewart had been sick with lung fever for about two weeks, but was not considered in danger, until Monday morning last. Dugald Stewart was the son of Hon. Ira Stewart, and brother of Hon. John W. Stewart. He was born Sept. 26th, 1821. He prepared for college in Middlebury, and in 1838 entered the college at that place, graduating in 1842. On leaving college he studied law, was admitted to the bar, but never entered upon the practice of his profession. He was for several years connected with the Rutland & Burlington railroad, as Paymaster. He represented Middlebury in the Legislature in 1860, 1861, and 1862, serving on some of the most important committees. In 1855 he was appointed clerk of the county of Addison, which office he held at the time of his death. In 1864 he was appointed Auditor of Accounts by Governor Smith, and in the performance of the duties of this office has become familiarly known to the people of the state. By them he has ever been regarded a most capable, honest, and efficient officer. In his death the state has suffered a loss, which seems almost irreparable.
