NAME CHANGED WESTERN LEAGUE IS NOW A THING OF THE PAST. THE •AMERICAN - LEAGUE NOW PRESIDENT FRANKLIN WON TOUGH FIGHT OVER GALT AND COMISKEY. THE PLAYING SEASON EXTENDED Catcher Dixon, Second Baseman Atherton and Third Baseman Burke Coveted by Franklin. CHICAGO, Oct. 12.-The Western: Baseball League is now of the past and in its place is the American Baseball League, organized at the annual meeting the Western Baseball League held yesterday at the Great Northern Hotel. The question of the change of the name of the league occasioned ,much discussion but was finally settled by a unanimous vote in the affirmative. The meeting of the league was long and when the magnates adjourned they had not completed all they had laid out in their program and will convene again today to complete their work. President Johnson called a meeting of the board of directors of the league in the morning which considered the awarding of the pennant to which went to Indianapolis. The board also heard the report of the treasurer and adopted the report. The directors next are: J. Manning, C. L. Alspaugh, W. F. Golt, G. A. Vanderbeck and President Johnson. President Johnson was authorized to make the schedule for 1900 and the regular meeting for considering the same will be held March 14th in Chicago. President Johnson was instructed to write the National Board of Arbitration asking a revision of the national agreement, changing the drafting season to two years and the drafting price to $1,000 instead of $500. Ten per cent. of the total receipts of the year were divided among the clubs of the league. The amount of fines paid durthe year is $305. President Franklin last night made Manager Mack of Milwaukee an offer for Third-Baseman Burke and SecondBaseman Atherton, but no trade was made. Franklin also offered to trade Catcher Diggins for Dixon of Minneapolis, but Salspaugh declined.
