Fletcher said he didn't think CART's split with USAC would result in fewer fans at those two races. "The race fan identifies with drivers and teams, not necessarily sanctioning organizations. When we announce that A.J., Mario Andretti, the Unser brothers, Gordon Johncock, Danny Ongais and the rest of the top drivers are going to be at Phoenix, the fan will be satisfied he is seeing the best." CART officials claim membership of 25 car owners representing 27 cars, including nearly all the top names in the sport. "Car owners have put up $7,500 each to be a voting member and $1,- 000 to be a non-voting member," Wood said, adding that CART will be much more flexible than USAC regarding needed changes. "I called up Pat Patrick and said we'd like to be able to keep pit gate proceeds, which normally go to USAC. After I explained the situation to him, he was all for it and said, 'Sure, go ahead.™* Wood said CART's purse will be elevated to $75,000 for a Phoenix race as opposed to $35,000 in the past. "But we should be able to afford to pay it because we won't be paying out a lot of the extras such as USAC sanctioning fees and their 10 percent of the TV money." CART members also have pointed out that, if they make mistakes with their rules, they won't wait a year to change the rule. USAC's 22-member board usually must wait a year to make rule changes. "If the (turbocharger) boost pressures we've chosen aren't right after the first race, we'll change them to make them right for the second race," a CART source said. "It's the only way to do things." Wood still thinks CART and USAC may eventually resolve their differences so that each will have equal voice in the championship division. But who knows how long that will take?
