TV sports Coleman receives pink slip at WJW • Three months after returning as 6 p.m. anchor, he's out. BY R.D. HELDENFELS Beacon Journal television writer The job roller coaster has plunged again for Casey Coleman. The sports anchor at WJW (Channel 8) will have his last day at the Cleveland Fox affiliate June 27, Channel 8 news director Greg Easterly said yesterday. The decision came three months to the day after Coleman moved back into one of Casey Coleman Casey Coleman the main sports anchor jobs at Channel 8, where he has worked d since 1982. Easterly said only that "we decided to go in a different direction." That's a standard explanation offered by TV station executives for personnel changes. It is the same reason given when new owner Fox Television Stations (part of the Fox network) let general manager Bob Rowe go earlier this year. Coleman was demoted from the main anchor position by Rowe in October of 1986, but appeared to have been vindicated in March, when the new bosses put him back in as 6 p.m. anchor. But it was noted at the time that Coleman, who has not returned several calls from the Beacon Journal since last October, got only half a loaf in the reinstatement. John Telich was named 10 p.m. weeknight sports anchor, and Mark Schroeder, who had been anchor at both the 6 and 10 p.m. from October 1996 to March, still was around as weekend sports anchor. Easterly said the station will seek a replacement for Coleman, who began at Channel 8 as a weekend sports anchor in January 1982 and became a weeknight anchor the following October. The station will consider people presently at Channel 8, as well as candidates from outside, he said.
