Dewey Favored By Roper Poll Survey Indicts GOP' Leads by 15 Per Cent NEW YORK, Aug. 12-The election of Thomas E. Dewey to the Presidency is now favored by 46.3 cent of the public, while 31.5 per per cent support, the reelection of President Fortune Magazine's ltaest survey discloses today. Interviewing for this survey was begun (under the direction of Elmo Roper) immediately after Truman's nomination July 15. The question follows, with replies: "If the election were being today, which candidate President do you think you'd a vote for: President Truman, Governor Dewey, Henry Wallace, or who?" Truman 31.5% Dewey 46.3 Wallace 3.0 Thomas (volunteered) .2 Other (volunteered) 2.4 Don't know 16.6 The 2.4 per cent who mentioned candidates other than the first four included those who favored Governor J. Strom Thurmond, of South Carolina, nominated by Southern Democrats on July 17. Fortune points out the "rebel"* Democrats' convention was held just as interviewing for this survey began, the proportion for Thurmond is almost certainly low. Fortune points out that effects on voters' opinion of the special Congressional session not shown in this survey, nor are effects of the Wallace convention which was held A week after interviewing began.
