'Chicago' dazzles area film critics By ROBERT PHILPOT STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER Chicago, the razzle-dazzle movie adaptation of the Bob Fosse stage musical, was named Best Picture of 2002 by the Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics Association. The movie didn't win any other awards in the ninth annual poll, although stars Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones received votes in the Best Actress category, and Rob Marshall was runnerup for Best Director. Jack Nicholson was named Best Actor for his performance in About Schmidt, about the life-changing journey of an aging insurance actuary. Julianne Moore was named Best Actress for Far From Heaven, in which she plays a 1950s homemaker who has an interracial romance after discovering that her husband is gay. Far From Heaven also won the award for Best Cinematography, and placed second in the Best Picture voting. Renee Zellweger struts her stuff adaptation of the Bob Fosse stage POLL Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics select the 10 best movies of 2002. Peter Jackson was named Best Director for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which placed third in the Best Picture voting. Y Tu Mama Tambien, a picaresque Mexican coming-of-age tale about two young men, was named Best Foreign Film. Bowling for Columbine, Michael Moore's confrontational nonfiction film about Americans' fascination with guns, won Best Documentary, and Spirited Away won for Best Animated Film. Feardotcom, a horror film involving a Web site with a live snuff cam, was named Worst Picture. MIRAMAX with a male chorus line in the movie musical. My Big Fat Greek Wedding won the Russell Smith Award. Named for the late Dallas Morning News film critic, the award is given annually to the best low-budget or cuttingedge independent film. The Dallas- Worth Film Critics Association consists of 59 broadcast and print journalists from throughout North Texas. Here are their picks for the 10 best movies of 2002: 1. Chicago. 2.
