Berrette as Saturday. touchdowns USAC increases fuel allotment By HARVEY SHAPIRO Daily News Sports Writer Who says the United States Auto Club is hard of hearing? USAC has come under heavy criticism this season because of its fuel restrictions, engine formula, excessive speed. Well, there will be some changes made in 1979. Championship division cars will be given more fuel, a smaller rear wing and an ever-present pressure relief valve. In a nutshell, here's what it means: 1- Fuel- mileage figure will be changed to 1.5 miles per gallon as compared to the current 1.8 mpg allotment for all races. Fuel allotment for a 500- mile race will be increased from 278 gallons, plus three gallons for parade warmup, parade and pace laps, to 333 gallons, plus the three gallon extra allowance. 2- The rear wing width will be reduced from 43 to 36 inches. 3-- The pressure relief valve (pop-off valve) which is presently used only for qualification attempts will be utilized at all times and will be set at 80 inches of manifold pressure, the current qualification setting, for all engines. REYNOLD C. MacDONALD, USAC Board Chairman, said there were several reasons for moving in this direction. struction on the USAC stock cars could be improved. Auto Racing Shapiro "We have increased the amount of fuel to improve engine performance," said MacDonald, "and the reduction in rear-wing size is the first step in slowing down the cars through the turns and to reduce the turbulence behind the cars." (It is estimated the cars will be slowed down 3-4 miles per hour.) In addition, two Safety Committee recommendations were adopted by the Board of Directors. One requires all open-cockpit cars to be equipped with a quick-release steering wheel by 1980 and recommends their use next year. The 1975 Snell Foundation specifications for helmets also were adopted as USAC's minimum standards. The USAC Board also determined that sprint cars, when competing on paved tracks, will be required to run the same tire compound, tread design and coding for qualifications, heats and the features and also ruled that fuel-tank con- PITSTOPS - USAC's sprints make their second appearance of the season today at Rossburg's Eldora Speedway. Perennial runnerup Tom Bigelow has the title virtually sewed up. He has a 133-point lead over Billy Cassella, who is sidelined with a broken arm. Rich Vogler (with 11 feature victories this season) has a commanding 209- point lead over Steve Lotshaw in the USAC midget point standings. Pancho Carter beat Gary Bettenhausen by 56 points for the USAC championship dirt car division title. A.J. Foyt holds a 185- point lead over Terry Ryan in the USAC stock car division chase. Springfield's Gary Bowsher is fourth, 220 points behind Foyt. With seven NASCAR Grand National events left, defending champion Cale Yarborough holds a 298-point cushion over Benny Parsons. He has also earned $337,030. Cale and Company are in action today in the Delaware 500 at Dover, Del. Two top drivers - Darrell Waltrip and Neil Bonnett - have been placed on 30 days probation for rough riding in last week's Capital City 400, won by Waltrip. Waltrip was cited for unnecessarily rough driving during the race, Bonnet for rough driving on pit row at the end of the race.
