Hollywood CALLS

MAR A MOVIE MAKERS …students at Dundee College could well end up using their skills on the film sets of movie blockbusters Hollywood od CALLS UNDEE College D has Scottish anticipated Screen's decision to build a Hollywood standard film studio in Scotland. They have set up a course which gives students the technical capability to work in film studios. A total of 13 HNC digital media students have been using state-of-the-art equipment which is the kind used in the post production processes in the film-making world. Starting last August, they worked with Alias/Wavefront software, which is the same software used to create the special effects in blockbuster movies such as Jurassic Park, Men in Black, Independence Day and the award-winning Titanic. Alias/Wavefront are just one of a number of companies which have supported the unique course. Mike Uden, of Rushes, the London firm which brought Steve McQueen back to TV screens across the country in the eye-catching Ford Puma advert, contributed the special effects segments of the college course. The college is also the only place in Britain where students have the chance to use the same software as that used by George Lucas to create Star Wars. The credit for attracting such talent and assistance lies with Dave Mitchell, the digital media course tutor. "We forged sound partnerships with a number of leading companies, all with incredible track records in this field," said Dave. The course was split into film post-production and video games design. Students chose one or the other. Local games giants DMA Design created the games part of the course and Dundee College is a Sony Playstation Development Partner. This gives the students the opportunity to gain first hand knowledge and places them in the front line for consideration when job opportunities come up at these As the film industry in Scotland gains momentum, one college is developing production wizards companies. They use industrystandard equipment and are tutored by people who actually work in the industry. "The games industry globally seems to be going for a certain Scottish look and Dundee is attracting interest and investment from California to Tokyo," commented Dave. He is confident of good future prospects for his students, who have all passed with flying colours. One 18-year-old student has been offered an internship with Viz Interactive in Dunfermline as a games artist and modeller. In a few years, her potential income could be in excess of £35,000. NOTHER prodigy left A: art years school to enrol after at three Dundee College. He has already set up his own web design company and is building up a regular client base. All students are well skilled in web design. They created and managed their own 300-page interactive website with sponsorship from Apple Computers UK. Yet another successful partnership between business and education. While the logo for the City of Discovery uses Captain Scott's ship, it has taken on a new meaning. It means that, by discovering new technologies and developing new talents in new industries, Dundee College's students are charting their own way to success. Interviews are taking place this summer for the next digital media course, so would-be Scottish Screen/ Hollywood types should contact the college now.
