Pirates are Rhody killed

Pirates are Rhody killed By Skip Miller Correspondent HAMPTON By mid-day Saturday, the temperature was dropping and wind gusts of as much as 40 mph were buffeting Hampton University's Armstrong Stadium. The rain pulsed with the wind, going from drizzle to pelt and back again. Rhode Island coach Tim Stowers could have asked for better conditions for the Rams 56-7 victory. A dry field, maybe. Or better kicking conditions. He was sending his undefeated Rams into one of those games that make him nervous, a midseason encounter in which good teams too often deflate and opponents too often overachieve. Hampton University coach Joe Taylor was having a few more p pointed concerns. Starting quarterback Ataveus Cash, who had only two days of practice, was still limping on a sprained ankle. Taylor needed his passing attack. A gimpy quarterback, the rain and the gusting wind were problems he didn't need. Not against the No. 7 team in Division I-AA. Not against one of the top teams in the crack Atlantic 10 Conference. Let's fast-forward to 1:33 p.m. and the game's first play from scrimmage. Cash checked off at the line of scrimmage. Rather than the running play that was scripted, he called for a pass pattern into the teeth of the wind. His pass spiraled up ... and virtually stopped in the wind. It then dropped into the hands of URI's Chuck Welsey, who returned it 37 yards for : a touchdown. The game was 21 seconds old. And the die was cast. At game's end, Stowers' sigh of relief wasn't audible, but it certainly was apparent. With the Rams' fifth victory in a row in hand, he takes his troops back home for an Atlantic 10 joust with William and Mary. It will be Rhody's first home game since Sept. 8. "We're pleased," he said. "And we're very glad to be going home. In a way, we've gone through the hard part of our schedule. Four of our last six games are at home, and they're all conference games." The Pirates are on the road next week, but they don't have far to travel. They visit nearby Norfolk State for the MEAC's annual Battle of the Bay. After the first play of the game, the wind wasn't through with Hampton. Four plays after the interception, a fourth down put HU's Tellis Bolden into punt formation. He drilled the kick. It went up, encountered the wind and blew out of bounds 10 yards from the line of scrimmage. Seven plays later, quarterback Vince Nedimyer scored on a 5- yard keeper to boost Rhode Island to a 14-0 lead. Nedimyer scored again on the third play of the second quarter. This time he tucked in behind the block of Jalini Clement on a 2-yard dive. Just like that, in some 18 minutes, the game was out of reach. "The storyline of this one is two-thirds of the team showed up," Taylor said. "The defense was there, and the special teams were there. The offense, however, was missing. "We did nothing to help ourselves win and everything to help ourselves lose." After the first three touchdowns, Taylor said, "it snowballed. We wanted to throw more because that was our game plan. But we had a gimpy quarterback, and the wind meant we were playing a two-quarter game. You can only count on the passing game when the wind is at your back."
