Can't See The Forest...

COURIER • BRISTOL VIRGINIA-TENNESSEAN Sunday, October 3, 1982 100* BRISTOL HERALD SPORTS FORUM Can't See The Forest... To The Editor: Regarding the recent letter from Mr. Gary Eaton, we feel the need to reply to certain statements made about Bristol International Raceway and Thunder Valley Dragway. Eaton criticized the reporting sports writer Coy Bays has done recently, charging that Bays was 1 taking a "dig" against International Hot Rod Association President Larry Carrier and Carl Moore. Bays' reporting charged that the field at the recent IHRA Summer Nationals was below par because some top name drivers were I not on hand. If Bays is taking a dig at anyone, it is Gary Baker and Warner Hodgdon, owners of Thunder Valley Dragway who were hosting the event. Eaton suggests that Bays' reporting is slanted to favor Baker and Hodgdon, who also own Bristol International Raceway, and against Carrier and Moore. Carrier and Moore no longer own Thunder Valley Dragway, only IHRA. But, when taken into perspective, it is called objective reporting. Now, to answer a few claims about "What has Bristol International Raceway done for the spectators," which again is owned by Baker and Hodgdon, here is a short list: -New seating. Almost 3,000 new seats with b backrests for the fan's comfort were installed in August. -Added handicapped seating and a shuttle service for handcapped fans. -New sewer lines were installed prior to the Busch 500, thus eliminating recent problems in the restrooms. -Increased capacity of res- trooms in order to handle the record crowds attending Bristol Raceway events. -New water lines, at a cost of $75,000, were run throughout the raceway grounds this spring. - -Installed new souvenir stands and improved the line of souvenirs handled for the fans. -Installed additional lighting in the turns to increase the visibility of the popular night racing. -Increased the parking area in order to handle more fans, (BIR turned away several thousand fans in August 1981 because of a sellout and lack of parking. -Widened pit row for the safety of the drivers and teams as well as improve the competition for the fans. (Example: Dale Earnhardt was knocked out of the 1981 Busch 500 because of a pit road crash, eliminating a top car and decreasing the competition.) And as far as drivers who missed the Busch 500, it appears as though Eaton is a bit confused. He listed 10 name drivers who missed the Busch 500 and said Bays did not report their missing the race like he did on those missing the Summer Nationals. Of those 10, five run only a limited schedule and were not listed as entries (Benny Parsons, Neil Bonnett, Cale Yarborough, Bill Elliott and David Pearson), two indeed were at Bristol for the Busch 500 (Cecil Gordon and Jody Ridley) and three don't run Grand National races anymore (Richard Childress, Mike Alexander, and Donnie Allison). As he told Bays, I tell Mr. Eaton... "Quit being controversial if you don't know what you are writing about." As you can see, Bristol Raceway - and in the future Thunder Valley Dragway - will continue to grow and improve. The ones who will ben- efit are the fans. Ninety-nine percent of the fans appreciate the effort being made. Then there are one or two who can't see t the forest for the trees and they scream t the loudest. Eddie Gossage EDITOR'S NOTE: Eddie Gossage is the assistant general manager of Bristol International Raceway. Cavs Are For Real... To The Editor: I am writing this article to congratulate the Bristol Herald-Courier sports staff on their Holston High School football coverage. I am a former student and football player at Holston, and I have enjoyed reading the articles on the Holston team. One thing is for sure, Holston is for real in the Hogoheegee District. In the past, Holston hasn't received any good publicity at all, which isn't surprising since there has not been a winning season at Holston for quite awhile. But this year there has been some changes, and those changes are with the coaching staff. Three coaches: Jack Henderson (former head coach), Mark Blevins, and Matt Clear are gone. The Holston athletic department did a great job in hiring new coaches who are great. From what I have seen, new head coach Duane Alderman really knows what he is doing. Also these coaches have something to work with in terms of talent - which of course is what all good coach staffs need. These players have and are giving all they can to Holston High, and I congratulate them. Congratulations Holston High football team and coaches. And thanks to the Bristol Herald-Courier sports writers. Keith McCall Holston High School Football Fan
