VERMONT'S PROTEST, partment Commander Blodgett as follows: HEADQUARTERS DEP'T VT,G. A. R.) St Johnsbury, Vt., June 17,1887. Respectfullp referred to E. J.Ormsbee Governor of Vermont, for the purpose expressed in the resolution. P. D. BLODGETT, BRATTLEBORO, June 17.-The action of President Cleveland in approving the order for the removal of the rebel battle flags captured by Union troops to the capitals of the Southern States created much indignation among the members of the Grand Army assembled here today to dedicate the new soldiers' monument. The announcement that the Presdent had revoked the order did not appreciably lessen the storm against him. The sentiment of all patriotic Vermont ers on the subject was voiced in a series of resolutions, unanimously adopted at a mass meeting of 500. Grand Army comrades held here this morning. The resolutions were prepared by a committee consisting of Past Department Commanders Valentine and Greenleaf and General Gllmore and received the unqualified approval of Governor Ormsbee and the Department Commander Blodgett of the G. A. R. Col. Hooker, in ofthe fering the President had resolutions, said that although vetoed the order for action removing of the President battle flags Cleveland the proposed was still deserving of rebuke and denunciation. The resolutions adopted were as follows: WHEREAS, We; the comrades of the comrades of the Grand Army of the Re• public this day assembled in Brattleboro for the purpose of assisting in the dedication of a monument to our comrades who gave their lives for the tion of the Union, have beard with preservapro- found regret of the action of the President of the United States in directing the return to the several States of the flags captured by the Union troops during the rebellion, it is Resolved, That while we earnestly depreciate all attempts to keep alive feel ings of sectionalism and regard with most friendly feelings our late antagonists, we most solemnly and earnestly protest for ourselves and in the name of our fallen comrades, whose memory is so vividly brought to mind by the solemu ceremonies of the day, against removing from their present resting place the bloody emblems of a treason that cost so many precious lives, fully beliving that such removal will do more to keep alive the bitter recollections of the war than anything that transpired since its close. Resolved, That these resolutions be transmitted by the department commander to His Excellency, the Governor of Vermont, with the request that the same be forwarded to President Cleve• land. The resolutions were endorsed by De- Department Commander. Governor Ormsbee endorsed the reso lutions as follows and forwarded the same by mail tonight to the President. BRATTLEBORO, Vt., June 17, 1887. To Grover Cleveland, President of the United States, Washington, D. C.: I herewith forward to you resolutions of a large assembly y of the veteran soldiers of Vermont on the subject of the return of the rebel flags captured by the Union soldiers during the war. The preamble and resolutions have my un qualified and warmest approval and you may rest assured that they contain the sentiments of Vermonters on the sub- EBENEZER J. ORMSBEE, Governor of Vermont.
