| 1Καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν Πιλᾶτον.2ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες: τοῦτον εὕραμεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος ἡμῶν καὶ κωλύοντα φόρους Καίσαρι διδόναι, καὶ λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν Χριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι.3ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος ἠρώτησεν αὐτὸν λέγων: σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων; ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη: σὺ λέγεις.4ὁ δὲ Πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους: οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ.5οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν, διδάσκων καθ' ὅλης τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε.6Πιλᾶτος δὲ ἀκούσας ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν,7καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας Ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν, ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς Ἡρῴδην, ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις.8ὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν: ἦν γὰρ ἐξ ἱκανῶν χρόνων θέλων ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν περὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ' αὐτοῦ γινόμενον.9ἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς: αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ.10εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ.11ἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν καὶ ὁ Ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας περιβαλὼν ἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ Πιλάτῳ.12ἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι ὅ τε Ἡρῴδης καὶ ὁ Πιλᾶτος ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετ' ἀλλήλων: προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς αὐτούς. | 1 Then the whole assembly of them rose up and brought him before Pilate,2 and there fell to accusing him; We have discovered, they said, that this man is subverting the loyalty of our people, forbids the payment of tribute to Caesar, and calls himself Christ the king.3 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the king of the Jews? He answered him, Thy own lips have said it.4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, I cannot discover any fault in this man.5 But they insisted, He rouses sedition among the people; he has gone round the whole of Judaea preaching, beginning in Galilee and ending here.6 Pilate, upon the mention of Galilee, asked whether the man was a Galilean;7 and learning that he belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, remitted his cause to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at this time.8 Herod was overjoyed at seeing Jesus; for a long time he had been eager to have sight of him, because he had heard so much of him, and now he hoped to witness some miracle of his.9 He asked him many questions, but could get no answer from him,10 although the chief priests and scribes stood there, loudly accusing him.11 So Herod and his attendants made a jest of him, arraying him in festal attire out of mockery, and sent him back to Pilate.12 That day Herod and Pilate, who had hitherto been at enmity with one another, became friends. | 1Et surgens omnis multitudo eorum, duxerunt illum ad Pilatum.2Cœperunt autem illum accusare, dicentes: Hunc invenimus subvertentem gentem nostram, et prohibentem tributa dare Cæsari, et dicentem se Christum regem esse.3Pilatus autem interrogavit eum, dicens: Tu es rex Judæorum? At ipse nihil illi respondebat.10Stabant autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ constanter accusantes eum.11Sprevit autem illum Herodes cum exercitu suo: et illusit indutum veste alba, et remisit ad Pilatum.12Et facti sunt amici Herodes et Pilatus in ipsa die: nam antea inimici erant ad invicem. |
| 13Πιλᾶτος δὲ συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν14εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς: προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας οὐθὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ' αὐτοῦ,15ἀλλ' οὐδὲ Ἡρῴδης: ἀνέπεμψεν γὰρ αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡμᾶς: καὶ ἰδοὺ οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ.16παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω.1718ἀνέκραγον δὲ παμπληθεὶ λέγοντες: αἶρε τοῦτον, ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν τὸν Βαραββᾶν:19ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον βληθεὶς ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.20πάλιν δὲ ὁ Πιλᾶτος προσεφώνησεν, αὐτοῖς θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν Ἰησοῦν.21οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες: σταύρου, σταύρου αὐτόν.22ὁ δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς: τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος; οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ: παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω.23οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις αἰτούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι, καὶ κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν.24καὶ Πιλᾶτος ἐπέκρινεν γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτημα αὐτῶν:25ἀπέλυσεν δὲ τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον εἰς φυλακὴν, ὃν ᾐτοῦντο, τὸν δὲ Ἰησοῦν παρέδωκεν τῷ θελήματι αὐτῶν. | 13 And now Pilate summoned the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people,14 and said to them, You have brought this man before me as one who seduces the people from their allegiance; I examined him in your presence, and could find no substance in any of the charges you bring against him;15 nor could Herod, when I referred you to him. It is plain that he has done nothing which deserves death.16 I will scourge him, and then he shall go free.17 At the festival, he was obliged to grant them the liberty of one prisoner:18 but the whole concourse raised the cry, Away with this man; we must have Barabbas released.19 (Barabbas was a man who had been thrown into prison for raising a revolt in the city, and for murder.)20 Once more Pilate spoke to them, offering to set Jesus at liberty;21 but they continued to answer with shouts of, Crucify him, crucify him.22 Then for the third time he said to them, Why, what wrong has he done? I can find no fault in him that deserves death; I will scourge him, and then he shall go free.23 But they, with loud cries, insisted on their demand that he should be crucified; and their voices carried the day;24 Pilate gave his assent that their request should be granted,25 releasing the man of their choice who had been imprisoned for revolt and murder, while he handed Jesus over to their will.[1] | 13Pilatus autem, convocatis principibus sacerdotum, et magistratibus, et plebe,14dixit ad illos: Obtulistis mihi hunc hominem, quasi avertentem populum, et ecce ego coram vobis interrogans, nullam causam inveni in homine isto ex his in quibus eum accusatis.15Sed neque Herodes: nam remisi vos ad illum, et ecce nihil dignum morte actum est ei.16Emendatum ergo illum dimittam.17Necesse autem habebat dimittere eis per diem festum unum.18Exclamavit autem simul universa turba, dicens: Tolle hunc, et dimitte nobis Barabbam:19qui erat propter seditionem quamdam factam in civitate et homicidium missus in carcerem.20Iterum autem Pilatus locutus est ad eos, volens dimittere Jesum.21At illi succlamabant, dicentes: Crucifige, crucifige eum.22Ille autem tertio dixit ad illos: Quid enim mali fecit iste? nullam causam mortis invenio in eo: corripiam ergo illum et dimittam.23At illi instabant vocibus magnis postulantes ut crucifigeretur: et invalescebant voces eorum.24Et Pilatus adjudicavit fieri petitionem eorum.25Dimisit autem illis eum qui propter homicidium et seditionem missus fuerat in carcerem, quem petebant: Jesum vero tradidit voluntati eorum. |
| 26Καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν, ἐπιλαβόμενοι Σίμωνά τινα Κυρηναῖον ἐρχόμενον ἀπ' ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.27ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν, αἳ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν.28στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν: θυγατέρες Ἰερουσαλήμ μὴ κλαίετε ἐπ' ἐμέ: πλὴν ἐφ' ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν,29ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν: μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ αἱ κοιλίαι αἳ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν, καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ἔθρεψαν.30τότε ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν: πέσετε ἐφ' ἡμᾶς, καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς: καλύψατε ἡμᾶς:31ὅτι εἰ ἐν τῷ ὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν, ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται;32ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι κακοῦργοι δύο σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι.33Καὶ ὅτε ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον κρανίον, ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους, ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν, ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν.34ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν: πάτερ, ἄφες αὐτοῖς, οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν. διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον κλήρους. | 26 As they led him off, they caught hold of a man called Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and loaded him with the cross, so that he should carry it after Jesus.27 Jesus was followed by a great multitude of the people, and also of women, who beat their breasts and mourned over him;28 but he turned to them, and said, It is not for me that you should weep, daughters of Jerusalem; you should weep for yourselves and your children.29 Behold, a time is coming when men will say, It is well for the barren, for the wombs that never bore children, and the breasts that never suckled them.30 It is then that they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us.31 If it goes so hard with the tree that is still green, what will become of the tree that is already dried up?[2]32 Two others, who were criminals, were led off with him to be put to death.33 And when they reached the place which is named after a skull, they crucified him there; and also the two criminals, one on his right and the other on his left.34 Jesus meanwhile was saying, Father, forgive them; they do not know what it is they are doing. And they divided his garments among themselves by lot. | 26Et cum ducerent eum, apprehenderunt Simonem quemdam Cyrenensem venientem de villa: et imposuerunt illi crucem portare post Jesum.27Sequebatur autem illum multa turba populi et mulierum, quæ plangebant et lamentabantur eum.28Conversus autem ad illas Jesus, dixit: Filiæ Jerusalem, nolite flere super me, sed super vos ipsas flete et super filios vestros.29Quoniam ecce venient dies in quibus dicent: Beatæ steriles, et ventres qui non genuerunt, et ubera quæ non lactaverunt.30Tunc incipient dicere montibus: Cadite super nos; et collibus: Operite nos.31Quia si in viridi ligno hæc faciunt, in arido quid fiet?32Ducebantur autem et alii duo nequam cum eo, ut interficerentur.33Et postquam venerunt in locum qui vocatur Calvariæ, ibi crucifixerunt eum: et latrones, unum a dextris, et alterum a sinistris.34Jesus autem dicebat: Pater, dimitte illis: non enim sciunt quid faciunt. Dividentes vero vestimenta ejus, miserunt sortes. |
| 35καὶ εἱστήκει ὁ λαὸς θεωρῶν. ἐξεμυκτήριζον δὲ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες λέγοντες: ἄλλους ἔσωσεν, σωσάτω ἑαυτόν, εἰ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ὁ ἐκλεκτός.36ἐνέπαιξαν δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι, ὄξος προσφέροντες αὐτῷ37καὶ λέγοντες: εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων, σῶσον σεαυτόν.38ἦν δὲ καὶ ἐπιγραφὴ ἐπ' αὐτῷ: ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων οὗτος.39Εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὐτὸν: λέγων οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ ὁ Χριστός; σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς.40ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ἐπιτιμῶν αὐτῷ ἔφη: οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ;41καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως, ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν: οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν.42καὶ ἔλεγεν: Ἰησοῦ, μνήσθητί μου ὅταν ἔλθῃς εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν σου.43καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ: ἀμήν σοι λέγω, σήμερον μετ' ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ. | 35 The people stood by, watching; and the rulers joined them in pouring scorn on him; He saved others, they said; if he is the Christ, God’s chosen, let him save himself.36 The soldiers, too, mocked him, when they came and offered him vinegar,37 by saying, If thou art the king of the Jews, save thyself.38 (A proclamation had been written up over him in Greek, Latin and Hebrew, This is the king of the Jews.)39 And one of the two thieves who hung there fell to blaspheming against him; Save thyself, he said, and us too, if thou art the Christ.40 But the other rebuked him; What, he said, hast thou no fear of God, when thou art undergoing the same sentence?41 And we justly enough; we receive no more than the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing amiss.42 Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.43 And Jesus said to him, I promise thee, this day thou shalt be with me in Paradise. | 35Et stabat populus spectans, et deridebant eum principes cum eis, dicentes: Alios salvos fecit, se salvum faciat, si hic est Christus Dei electus.36Illudebant autem ei et milites accedentes, et acetum offerentes ei,37et dicentes: Si tu es rex Judæorum, salvum te fac.38Erat autem et superscriptio scripta super eum litteris græcis, et latinis, et hebraicis: Hic est rex Judæorum.39Unus autem de his, qui pendebant, latronibus, blasphemabat eum, dicens: Si tu es Christus, salvum fac temetipsum et nos.40Respondens autem alter increpabat eum, dicens: Neque tu times Deum, quod in eadem damnatione es.41Et nos quidem juste, nam digna factis recipimus: hic vero nihil mali gessit.42Et dicebat ad Jesum: Domine, memento mei cum veneris in regnum tuum.43Et dixit illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi: hodie mecum eris in paradiso. |
| 44Καὶ ἦν ἤδη ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ' ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐνάτης,45τοῦ ἡλίου ἐκλιπόντος: ἐσχίσθη δὲ τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον.46καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν: πάτερ, εἰς χεῖράς σου παρατίθεμαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου. τοῦτο δὲ εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν.47ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης τὸ γενόμενον ἐδόξαζεν τὸν θεὸν λέγων: ὄντως ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν.48καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην, θεωρήσαντες τὰ γενόμενα, τύπτοντες τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον. | 44 It was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.45 The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in the midst:46 and Jesus said, crying with a loud voice, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and yielded up his spirit as he said it.47 And the centurion, when he saw what befell, gave glory to God; This, he said, was indeed a just man.[3]48 And the whole multitude of those who stood there watching it, when they saw the issue, went home beating their breasts.[4] | 44Erat autem fere hora sexta, et tenebræ factæ sunt in universam terram usque ad horam nonam.45Et obscuratus est sol, et velum templi scissum est medium.46Et clamans voce magna Jesus ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum.
