The proposed Midlands Rail Hub programme aims to improve rail connectivity and boost economic growth across the Midlands and towards the South-West through a series of projects across the region.

Meeting future demand
Birmingham is one of the most complex and congested parts of the British rail network. Currently, the railway through central Birmingham is not equipped to meet the passenger demands of the future.
Midlands Rail Hub plans to increase capacity at Birmingham Moor Street station, next to the new HS2 station at Curzon Street. It also aims to ease congestion on key rail routes from central Birmingham.
Bordesley to Moor Street enhancements
We’ve found the most cost-effective way to boost rail capacity in central Birmingham. It involves building new track to link the Camp Hill line with the Chiltern main line. This allows more trains to run through Birmingham Moor Street station.
The new railway is critical to the wider Midlands Rail Hub programme, unlocking existing capacity constraints in central Birmingham. The project would also provide future opportunities for improved journeys further afield.
Currently we’re preparing the Outline Business Case for the Department for Transport. It supports continued development of the new railway between Bordesley and Moor Street stations. The project is under review to ensure it delivers value for money and stays affordable for rail users and taxpayers.
