NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco responds to a 49ers fan’s take on Brock Purdy’s 2025 performance and his potential for improvement.

A week ago, Brock Purdy was being hailed for his triumphantreturn to the 49ers’ starting lineup.

His performance brought a swift end to any conjecture about the team having any kind of quarterback controversy.

A week later, those who called for Mac Jones probably feel emboldened.

Purdy struggled in the first half of the49ers’ 20-9 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Monday night at Levi’s Stadium.

While there is no consideration within the 49ers organization of bringing in Jones off the sideline, Purdy’s turnover-filled night might have left some fans wondering if the Purdy who was so good in 2023 is ever coming back.

And that’s how we kick off this edition of 49ers Overreactions ...

2025 Brock Purdy IS the real Brock Purdy and we cannot expect him to play any better than this, in spite of 2023 evidence to the contrary. (@goodbyeLMJ)

Overreaction? Yes.

The 49ers expect him to play better than this, or they would not have rewarded him with a contract that places him among the top-10 highest-paid players in the NFL.

It always was going to be difficult for him to perform at the level he showed in his first full season as the starter, when he had a 113 passer rating and finished fourth in the NFL MVP voting. There is no doubt Monday night’s showing against Carolina is not going to cut it.

He was a split-second slow on his decision-making on his first two interceptions. Was it rust from missing so much time this season due to turf toe? Or is he physically not capable of driving the ball down the field?

The 49ers won the game, as Ji’Ayir Brown and the defense saved the day. The 49ers took more advantage of Bryce Young’s mistakes than the Panthers made the 49ers pay for Purdy’s giveaways.

Purdy established himself as one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league through his combination of anticipation, decisiveness and accuracy. Those qualities seemed to be lacking on Monday night — just one week after there was little he did wrong while rolling up 41 points against the Arizona Cardinals.

Brock Purdy has become a turnover machine and been on a downward trend since the games vs Ravens in 2023. (@AJ_CA49)

Overreaction? No.

Hey, it is what it is.

Purdy’s numbers took a nosedive beginning with that Christmas night game you reference against Baltimore at Levi’s Stadium. He threw four interceptions in that game.

Purdy had 11 interceptions in his first 18 regular-season games. He has 23 passes intercepted in his past 21 games. Did then-Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald provide the blueprint for generating takeaways against Purdy with zone coverages designed for defenders to converge on his throws over the middle of the field?

We can’t tell you why, but Purdy definitely has thrown more interceptions than he did earlier in his career. At one point, he had a streak of 248 consecutive pass attempts, including postseason, without throwing it to the other team.

That was a very poor opponent. Would have lost against most teams. SF on a sugar high, a long way from playoff contention. (@WrangleMickey)

Overreaction? Yes.

The Panthers are not a “very poor” team. They are average, though. Carolina came into the game with a 6-5 record and in the thick of the playoff hunt. They had an impressive Week 9 victory at Green Bay, so they showed they can win a game against a good team on the road.

But, we agree, the Panthers looked bad on Monday. Did the 49ers contribute to making them look bad? It’s hard to say, but the 49ers’ defense definitely won the day.

Playoff teams beat average and bad teams, and that is what the 49ers have mostly done through this point in the season. And if they continue to win against the middle-of-the-pack-or-worse teams on their schedule, they will qualify for the playoffs.

Niners will finish 13-4 and thus win the division. Just need LAR to lose in Seattle + one more game. (@TeutonSF)

Overreaction? Yes.

There’s nothing wrong with setting your sights high. But the odds are against the 49ers winning the NFC West. After all, the Rams look like the best team in the NFL right now. The 49ers have yet to find any semblance of inconsistency.

The 49ers will be doing well to secure a playoff spot. They still should be able to do that. The 49ers enter Sunday’s game at the Cleveland Browns with an 8-4 record. Two more wins could do the trick, especially with the 49ers’ strong record in NFC games. Three wins should guarantee a return to the postseason.

The Rams’ remaining schedule does not look all that challenging with games against Detroit and at Seattle looming as their only real threats.

Wide Receiver is a top need in the offseason. (@SpikerIsAwesome)

Overreaction? No.

Looking ahead to the offseason, the 49ers’ top needs are edge rusher and wide receiver. They can use some help on the offensive line, for sure, but it is not out of the question that the same starting unit is back intact to open the 2026 season. You heard it here first.

The only wide receivers who appear certain to be back next season are Ricky Pearsall, and two young players who have not contributed this season, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing. Also, veteran Demarcus Robinson is under contract through next season at a reasonable salary.

Jauan Jennings is scheduled for unrestricted free agency. He did not get the kind of contract offer from the 49ers he wanted this year, so he is likely to hit the open market. Kendrick Bourne has fallen out of the rotation. He also is scheduled to be a free agent.

It seems highlyunlikely Brandon Aiyuk will be back after the 49ers voided his $24.935 million option bonus for next year, removing all the guaranteed money he had remaining on his contract. That union looks as if it has run its course.

The 49ers currently have seven draft picks within the first four rounds of the draft. Wide receiver is a logical position for them to target early in the 2026 NFL Draft.
