Shinola opening in downtown Ann Arbor
Shinola Detroit: coming soon to downtown Ann Arbor.
On Tuesday, Shinola made it clear where it will be opening its newest high-end retail shop. Shinola signs were placed on the windows of theformer Selo/Shevel Gallerylocated at 301 S. Main St. in downtown Ann Arbor.
The companyannounced late last year that it would be opening a store in Ann Arbor in 2015, but would not confirm a location. An opening date has not been confirmed with the company.
Shinola is known for its Detroit-made watches and bicycles and last year the companyopened a 12,000-square-foot factory at the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education and Detroit's College for Creative Studies.
The leather factory has about 260 employees in its facility.
Shinola's flagship retail location is in Detroit located at 441 W. Canfield in Midtown, but the company has aggressively expanded over the last couple years withstores in London, Los Angeles and Chicago.
During the Christmas season, the companyplanned a shopping excursion from Ann Arbor to the Detroit location that bused shoppers from Ann Arbor to the flagship store.
The company was created by Tom Kartsotis - the founder of Fossil watches - in 2011 and is owned by Dallas-based Bedrock Manufacturing and Swiss watch components producer Ronda.
While the Selo/Shevel Gallery closed last year, the building was purchased last March by Dr. Reza Rahmani. The three-story building was purchased from Elaine Selo and Cynthia Shevel for $2.5 million.
The building was filled up quickly asTitle Boxing Club relocated to the space in December. Last month,Maize and Blue Deli announced it would be opening a restaurant in the building as well and is scheduled to open in March.
