Giants Select Jay Jackson

The Giants announced this afternoon they’re selecting the contract of reliever Jay Jackson. To create space on the 40-man roster, San Francisco transferred third baseman Evan Longoria from the 10-day to the 60-day injured list. To create active roster space, infielder Jason Vosler was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.
Additionally, staff ace Kevin Gausman has been placed on the family medical emergency list. Righty Logan Webb was recalled to start tonight’s game against the Cardinals in his place.
Jackson returns to the majors for the first time since 2019. That year, he made 28 appearances out of the Brewers bullpen. Across 30 1/3 innings, the hard-throwing righty pitched to a 4.45 ERA/3.57 SIERA. Jackson showed legitimate swing-and-miss stuff, racking up whiffs on 17.7% of his offerings and striking out hitters at a fantastic 35.6% clip. He also had some obvious control issues, though, walking 13.6% of batters faced that season.
The 33-year-old spent part of the 2020 campaign with the Chiba Lotte Mariners of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball before returning to the U.S. last summer. He signed a minors deal with San Francisco in January and has earned his way back to the big leagues with a fantastic start to the season in Sacramento. Jackson has made eight appearances with the River Cats and tossed eleven scoreless innings, punching out a whopping 48.6% of opponents against a minuscule 2.7% walk rate.
Longoria landed on the IL on June 6 with a left shoulder sprain. He’s now ineligible to come back until 60 days have passed since that original placement — not today’s transfer date — so he can return during the first week of August. It seems there’s some chance he’ll do so, as manager Gabe Kapler told reporters (including Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle) that Longoria’s doing well in his recovery. It has been an incredible bounceback season for the 35-year-old, who is hitting .280/.376/.516 over 186 plate appearances.

As a father of 4. With one child born with a CHD, I wish Gausman and his family the best of luck in bringing their new gift into this world. Nothing matters more than your family and their health.
My daughter was born as a micro preemie, 3 1/2 months early, born at 1lb 8oz, dropped to as little as 1lb 3oz. Today’s NICUs are absolutely amazing, if the Gausman family is looking at a premature baby.
Family comes first…
Yea mine was born 3lb13 had her open heart surgery at 3.5 months. She’s 11 now and such an amazing little girl you would never know she was born into such difficult circumstance. It’s amazing the medical stuff they are capable of even with tiny babies. We are very grateful! Best wishes to anyone facing a similar situation.
My sentiments exactly. My daughter is also 11 years old. After 7 surgeries, including brain bleeds, hydrocephalus, you would never know her circumstances as well. Otherwise a perfectly normal little girl.
I spent a year of my life living on a mountain top in Afghanistan. Witnessing what my wife and daughter went through, was 1000 x more difficult.
I also feel extremely lucky and fortunate.

This is a bit of a curveball to start after the All Star Game. Luckily Webb looked good last time out and the bullpen is deep with arms.
Concerning that Posey isn’t back but Casalli and Tromp can manage short term.

Longo is now on the 60 day IL? Zaidi looking at Kris Bryant? Donaldson?

Thairo Estrada is holding his own for now.
I doubt that Zaidi would pull the trigger on a trade that big, based on Longoria out for only an additional 3 weeks.
They could be interested in Bryant though since he can play in the OF as well as 3rd. But I think there’s zero chance they’d trade for JD. I doubt they want 2 RHHs that can only play 3B for the last 7 weeks or so.
JJ will be short term as his stats don’t call out anything except that he looks to be pitching with runners on base a lot.
Jay Jackson seems to be a time extension for Caleb Kilian to get some more innings, as I expect within next 2-4 weeks kilian will be on 40 man
