Red Sox Claim Joel Payamps, Designate Robert Stock

The Red Sox announced Wednesday that they’ve claimed right-handerJoel Payamps off waivers from the D-backs and designated fellow rightyRobert Stock for assignment in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Boston also announced that right-handerRyan Weber and southpawMatt Hall, both of whom were designated for assignment last Friday, were assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket after clearing outright waivers.
Payamps, 26, has just seven Major League innings under his belt. He’s struggled in a hitter-friendly setting with Triple-A Reno in the Pacific Coast League but was solid in Double-A Jackson in both 2018 and 2019, working to a combined 2.95 ERA with a 135-to-19 K/BB ratio in 128 innings. Payamps has worked as both a starter and a reliever in the minors, and he has a minor league option remaining for the upcoming 2021 season, which surely appeals to the Sox.
Stock, 31, has a big fastball and punched out 14 hitters in 13 1/3 innings with the Red Sox this past season, but he’s battled control issues throughout his MLB career (31 walks, three hit batters, 10 wild pitches in 63 2/3 frames).
The Red Sox gave the journeyman Weber a rotation opportunity in 2020 and held out hopes that he could elevate his game to a new level with some tweaks to his repertoire. However, while Weber managed a respectable 4.40 ERA in 43 innings of work, he also posted a lackluster 27-to-14 K/BB ratio and a 5.54 FIP. Hall was acquired out of the Tigers organization and drew some intrigue for the huge spin on his breaking ball, but he also struggled in a more limited sample with the Red Sox. Both were designated for assignment last Friday as the Sox set their roster in advance of next month’s Rule 5 Draft.

I grew up playing against Robert Stock in youth ball and that dude was a stud. He threw 90mph at like 13 years old
Just makes you realize how hard it really is to make the big leagues. I couldn’t have a 90 mph fast ball at 13, 23, 33, etc.
Are the Red Sox still referring to their Triple-A team as being in Pawtucket or is it now officially Worcester-based in advance of next season?

Scouting Report:
Payamps had a strong arm and threw in the low 90s with a slurvy breaking ball but above-average command. The reports of the changeup were that it would flash at times, but it wasn’t a pitch Payamps could rely on. Payamps creates a lot of bad swings and leaves hitters well out front. It could be due to more advanced sequencing, or the changeup could’ve taken a step forward. He ran into a bit of a rough patch when he hit Reno, but I’m willing to let the five homers allowed in 26 innings slide for now. It’s a tough place to pitch and it was at the end of the season. The most likely role for Payamps is a utility type pitcher.
He has an option, so he will be sent to AAA and be an up/down pitcher. Stock had no remaining options and would have had to clear waivers every time he would have been sent down. Stock also had control issues.

Bloom seems to really hate strike outs lol… I actually kind of thought Stock had the potential to develop into a solid reliever and has obvious K potential and a big fastball. But Bloom seems determined to fill out the pitching staff with guys who post below 9.0 K/9 rates. (I’m not specifically talking about Payamps — he actually seems like a solid enough claim) … it’s just in designating Stock and a few other moves he’s made… He’s essentially picked up several guys that barely strike anyone out and released or designated all the guys with big K potential.
He’s trying to stay away from those big 95+ MPH throwers so that how old is chapman doesn’t throw over someone’s head.
The big strikeout pitchers had a lot of problems walking too many batters and giving up way too many home runs for the Red Sox last year. I would rather have guys who induce weak contact, so you end up with more double plays and few home runs.
If you look back at the stats from the 1970s and 1980s strikeout rates were much lower, walks to a large degree were lower, and pitchers threw more innings. I would bet that the number of pitches per batter was lower as well which would have helped pitchers get through more innings (saving bullpens). Pitching staffs were 10. Now they are 12 or even 13 and a lot of the pitchers only come in for one inning. Rollie Fingers saves were often 2 or even three innings for Oakland (AL league leader in 1977, 1978, 1981).

I was hoping Bloom was done with the bottom of the roster churn but apparently not. The Red Sox will need to clear at least 3-4 spots off of their 40 man to sign major league players so I wouldn’t be surprised if this guy gets put on waivers soon himself.

If you want to understand Bloom’s signings, look at controllability and the number of options a players had. It makes a big difference on how valuable a players is.
The players Bloom obtained last August were:
Potts, Rosario, Seabold all were Rule 5 eligible and those teams had no space and the RS did, so they were far more valuable to to RS than those teams.
This kid has but a handful of innings @AAA level. He doesn’t walk many,generates swing and miss,has upside. Can’t be much worse than we saw this season.
