Comes from a baseball family. Two younger brothers, Nick and Jacob, both play professional baseball. Nick was an infielder with the Phillies, Tigers and Orioles (2021-24), while Jacob is a pitcher in the Texas Rangers organization pitching as high as Frisco (AA) in 2024. His father, Phil, ran track at Eastern Illinois and his mother, Ellen, played volleyball at Eastern Illinois. Phil, Sr., ran a 4:11 mile time in 1987...Nick faced Phil once in his Major League career and singled off him in the eighth inning of a game between the Phillies and Astros, Oct. 5, 2022...Graduated from Chatham Glenwood (Ill.) High School where he was 10-2 with a 0.53 ERA during his senior season in 2011. The ERA set the conference record until his younger brother Jacob broke the record in 2017 (0.21 ERA). Was the winning pitcher in the Class 3A Illinois High School Athletic Association State Championship against DeKalb...Played college baseball at Louisiana Tech University. Began the season with El Paso (AAA) but did not make an appearance before being recalled by SD on 4/4...In his first 15 appearances (4/5-5/12) had a 0.56 ERA (1 ER, 16.0 IP) with 17 SO against seven BB...Fanned a career-high five batters and worked a career-high 2.2 innings on 4/11 at COL...Placed on the 10-day DL on 5/13 with a right lat strain...made six rehab appearances between Lake Elsinore (A) and San Antonio (AA), missing 35 games before being reinstated on 6/21...Made two appearances for SD before being optioned to ELP on 6/24.. recorded six relief appearances for ELP, owning a 2.84 ERA before recalled by SD on 7/9, remaining with the big-league club for the rest of the season..Prior to the All-Star break, owned a 2.49 ERA (6 ER, 21.2 IP) in 20 appearances with no HR...following the All-Star break, had a 5.96 ERA (17 ER, 25.2 IP) in 25 games, allowing three HR...Had a 3.71 ERA (11 ER, 26.2 IP) at home, and in 46 career games at Petco Park, owns a 2.77 ERA (15 ER, 48.2 IP) with 54 SO against 19 BB...Nicknamed "Spin Rate" on the back of his jersey for Players' Weekend, led SD with an average spin rate of 2,634 revolutions per minute (min. 200 pitches thrown)...Relied on two primary pitches: four-seamer (61.6%) and slider (38.4%).

Split the season between El Paso (AAA) and San Diego, making his MLB debut on 6/11 vs. KC and becoming the first player selected by the Padres in the 2015 Draft to make the big leagues... At the time of his call-up to the big league squad on 6/11, he ranked tied for the Pacific Coast League lead with 13 saves in 13 opportunities and pitched to a 2.84 ERA (8 ER, 25.1 IP) with 31 SO against nine BB…did not allow a run over his final nine appearances and 10.1 IP for the Chihuahuas... Tossed a perfect eighth inning against the heart of the Royals' order on 6/11 in the seven-pitch big league debut... Allowed seven runs (all earned) over his four outings and 3.1 IP from 8/5-12, but closed the season allowing just eight runs (six earned) over his final 17.0 IP and 18 outings from 8/14 to 10/1... Posted a 1.57 ERA (4 ER, 23.0 IP) at Petco Park as opposed to a 7.20 ERA (16 ER, 20.0 IP) on the road... Righties hit just .211 (20-for-95) off him while lefties hit .300 (21-for-70)... Held the opposition to a .229 (8-for-35) average with runners in scoring position and a .167 (2-for-12) average in extra-innings.
