Chris Froome wins the Velo d'Or for best rider of 2013 following Tour de France triumph

The 28-year-old follows in the footsteps of Bradley Wiggins, the only other Brit to win the prestigious award

Tour de France champion Chris Froome has won the Velo d'Or award as the best rider of 2013.


Team Sky confirmed that 28-year-old Froome has become only the second Briton to win the award, following team-mate Sir Bradley Wiggins 12 months previously.


Froome, beat the likes of Giro d'Italia winner Vincenzo Nibali and the number one-ranked rider Joaquim Rodriguez to take the award, which is based on a poll of cycling journalists.


In addition to hisTour victory, Froome won the Criterium du Dauphine and Tour de Romandie in a dominant start to the season.

The 23-year-old Colombian Nairio Quintana, who finished second in the Tour and was named King of the Mountains and best young rider, was voted prospect of the year.

Christophe Riblon - winner of the Alpe d'Huez stage at the Tour de France - won the Velo d'Or Francais as best French rider.
