Mimetite "bow-tie." This morphology is the result of split crystal growth. The growth mechanism and cause of split crystals under natural conditions is poorly understood (Grigor’ev 1961; Ul’yanova et al. 1984). Recent studies of the morphologies of synthetic nanocrystals have shown that splitting can result from several different causes. These include the incorporation of molecular-scale impurities that cause offsets in the crystal structure (Pilapong et al. 2010); poor orientation fidelity during crystal growth by self-assembly of nanoparticles (Tang and Alivisatos 2006; Suzuki et al. 2016; Arumugam et al. 2017); and systematic defect production during rapid crystal growth at high degrees of solution supersaturation (Cha et al. 2013). A complete range of crystal splitting morphologies in mimetites, from simple hexagonal prisms to spherulites, is seen from the Rowley Mine. It will be interesting when mineralogists determine which of these mechanisms, if any, is the cause of splitting in natural crystals at this, and other deposits. John Rakovan photo (stacked).

A rare treasure from 2023 Mineral City Show in Tucson. After the wild blue Hemimorphite debacle, lots of people would think this is a fake as many have dug Searles Lake/Trona or have seen pink and white Halite, but pale blue is not something most have likely ever seen.
Copper sulfate is color agent and the patterns and steps on the cubes and stalactite are interesting. Steve Knox shared that the blue actually happened a couple times; however, stalactites only occurred once in 30 years that he is aware of.
