Named in 1988 by T. Armbruster, C. Bühler, S. Graeser, H.A. Stalder, and G. Amthauer for the type locality at Pizzo Cervandone, a mountain ridge along the Italian-Swiss border. The suffix/modifier indicates the species has essential REE, predominantly cerium.
