Name:
Originally named androsite-(La) in 1996 after its discovery locality on Andros Island, Greece. It was renamed by the Epidotes Subcommittee of the CNMMN in 2006. The prefix indicates a predominance of Mn3+ at the M1 site. The suffix/modifier indicates the dominant cation at the A2 site, which for the allanite subgroup is always a REE and in this case is lanthanum.
Type Locality:
A member of theAllanite Subgroup of theEpidote Group.

General Appearance of Type Material:
Minute subhedral to euhedral grains with a maximum diameter of 20-60 µm, rarely up to 200 µm, randomly interspersed in a fine- to medium-grained matrix.
Place of Conservation of Type Material:
Mineralogical Museum of the University of Florence (sample no. 2074/RI).
Geological Setting of Type Material:
Found in Mn-rich metamorphic rocks such as highly oxidized quartzitic schists, quartzites, and Mn-rich pyroxenoid and carbonate rocks. Found in the Ca-poor assemblages.
