Named for the chemical composition, in accordance with whiteite group nomenclature. The suffix indicates sequentially the dominant atom in the X, M1, and M2 structural positions. The root name is for John Sampson White, Jr. (30 September 1933, Monessen, Pennsylvania, USA -), associate curator of minerals, Smithsonian institution; founder, editor, and publisher (1970-1982) of the Mineralogical Record.
