Formula:
Mg2Si2O6
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
First discovered inOregon sunstones with unusual pleochroic/dichroic red to green coloration. The crystallographically oriented nanocrystals ofprotoenstatite andclinoenstatite in association withcopper nanocrystals are responsible for the unusual green and “watermelon” coloration of this gemstone, which is alabradorite.

Approval year:
2016

Classification of Protoenstatite

9 : SILICATES (Germanates)
D : Inosilicates
A : Inosilicates with 2-periodic single chains, Si2O6; pyroxene family
