Named after John Sampson White, Jr. (30 September 1933, Monessen, Pennsylvania, USA -), associate curator of minerals, Smithsonian Institution; founder, editor, and publisher (1970-1982) of the Mineralogical Record. It was named at the same time aswhiteite-(MnFeMg), where the suffixes indicate the dominant cations in the X, M(1), and M(2) structural positions.
