A very important change concerning nepheline is found in the recent (42nd) IMA Newsletter:potassium is essential in nepheline and theformula is changed to that recognized by Mindat. Seehttps://www.mindat.org/mesg-437726.html for details, and CNMNC Newsletter No. 42, April 2018.

A rock-forming mineral, and classed as afeldspathoid. Common in nepheline syenite, an igneous rock often found in alkaline complexes.

Can bear some water (admixture).

Likely polymorphous with so-calledcarnegieite and'α-carnegieite'.

Compare the relatedkalsilite and'UM1967-10-SiO:AlHNa', the latter being possibly a natural analogue of "nepheline hydrate".

The presence of satellite reflections seems to be a universal property of nepheline (Vulić et al., 2011); most samples show a practically complete Si-Al-ordering, but some exhibit disorder up to 20%.

Under subsolidus conditions, nepheline is intensively replaced by numerous secondary minerals, of which various zeolites (mainly natrolite, analcime, gonnardite), as well as cancrinite, muscovite and Al-O-H phases (gibbsite, böhmite, nordstrandite) are the most common.
