Name:
Named by Radusinović and Markov (1971) after what was, at the time, the constituent country of Macedonia, Yugoslavia. The area is now the country of North Macedonia. The area includes the type locality of Crni Kamen.
Type Locality:
A rare accessory mineral in microcline-quartz syenite pegmatite veins and as inclusions in oxide phases in a metamorphosed Fe-Mn ore body.

Macedonite is an oxide single perovskite with second order Jahn-Teller distortions. The Macedonite fromCrni Kamen is the only natural perovskite mineral known to contain significant amounts of Bi2O3 (2.2 wt.%) (Mitchellet al. 2016).
