Named in 1974 by Zdeněk Johan, Joseph Mantienne, and R. Picot in honor of Pierre Paul Laffitte (January 1, 1925 Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Alpes-Maritimes, France - ), director of BRGM (French Geological Survey), then director and president of Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris.
