In theA-site, group end-members either contain sixIII(Ag+Cu) cations (where Ag>Cu), or alternatively, contain a discrete metal-metal-bonded [Ag6]4+ polycation cluster. The latter cluster is accompanied by a charge-balancing vacancy at theS2Z site.

First Recorded Locality:
Biagioniet al. (2020) report that the name for the former, poorly defined species "freibergite" be discredited, and that the name be promoted to delineate the series of Ag-bearing tetrahedrites where 3apfu < Ag < 8apfu; tetrahedrite-group minerals with Ag < 3apfu belong to the tetrahedrite series, and tetrahedrite-group minerals with Ag > 8apfu belong to the rozhdestvenskayaite series.

Although considered a series with presently only two IMA-recognized end-members (argentotetrahedrite-(Fe) andkenoargentotetrahedrite-(Fe)), the existence of suspected additional members has been reported, although these have not yet been IMA approved. Hence, to accommodate these likely future recognitions, the "freibergite series" is here treated as the "Freibergite Subgroup" of theTetrahedrite Group.
