Named by C. Milton, J.M. Axelrod, and F.S. Grimaldi in 1955 in honor of Wilhelm Hermann Julius Eitel (6 May 1891, Frankfurt, Germany - 20 July 1979, Toledo, Ohio, USA), Director, Institute of Silicate Research, University of Toledo, Ohio, who first synthesized it.
