Coal dump that has been burning since 1984. The combustion was accidental, the result of a fire at a neighbouring wood depot. As a result of the high temperatures below the surface, the schists in the dump have turned brick-red. The burning areas are characterised by small smoking chimneys, disappearing vegetation and the appearance of crevasses on the surface.

In 2001, about a dozen houses in the immediate area were expropriated and demolished due to subsidence of the surface. There is currently an "exclusion zone" around the dump to which access is prohibited for safety reasons.

Note: Hatert et al. (2002) list the locality as "charbonnage d'Appaumée" ("Appaumée coal mine"). The "Rue Appaumée" is just west of the dump.
