Coal dump that has been burning since 1984. The combustion was accidental, the result of a fire at a neighbouring wood depot. As a result of the high temperatures below the surface, the schists in the dump have turned brick-red. The burning areas are characterised by small smoking chimneys, disappearing vegetation and the appearance of crevasses on the surface.
In 2001, about a dozen houses in the immediate area were expropriated and demolished due to subsidence of the surface.
Note: Hatert et al. (2002) list the locality as "charbonnage d'Appaumée" ("Appaumée coal mine"). The "Rue Appaumée" is just west of the dump.
