Mining (mainly silver) since Roman times. From the 14th Century for 150 years the main Serbian mint was located at the mine.

The Rudnik Mts. volcano-intrusive complex hosts a Pb-Zn-Ag deposit and belongs to the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenetic belt. The Rudnik deposit is made up of over 90 separate ore bodies. Skarn-replacement and high-temperature hydrothermal Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag-Bi-W polymetallic sulfide deposit.
