A uranium mine.
Two References by Raúl Jorge Tauber Larry:
1- Sierra de Comechingones District:
Within the granite room antecambric on the western slope of the Sierra de Comechingones staying various manifestations and uraniferous type vetiforme or stockwork warehouses. The most important of them is the mine "La Estela", which features a thick fluoritic-uraniferous stockwork of power up to 11 metres, housed in a porphyroid granite, which vein branches arise. Both that they are surrounded by impregnation of uranium halos. The dominant mineral is Uranophane, appearing in altered in Gummite Pitchblende depth. More than 3,000 tonnes of ore of this deposit with sporadic and incipient exploitation, were extracted with tenor of 0.5% U3O8.
2- La Estela mine (part of the former La Marquesa fluorite mine):
Elevation: 1722 m. above sea level.
On the western slopes of the Sierra de Comechingones, La Quebrada del Río Seco, Department Chacabuco, 8 km NE of Villa Lorca, is located the La Estela mine, adjacent uranium mine with fluorite called La Marquesa mine.
In the Gorge there are various fluorspar veins hosted in a porphyritic pink granite, extending with flashing the same Summit that saw something. All of them the only containing uranium ore is the call grain black, which constitutes the mine in question.
It's a vein of a power of up to two meters, installed in a breccia fault mineralized bodies that appear Laminar and guides irregular Fluorite Dark Violet colour of the fetid variety, whose mass granite grains and small pieces are often observed. Her course is East 100 ° South and his inclination is 45 ° - 50 ° South.
Uranophane, species of main uranium of this tank, lines in thin films the cracks and crevices of the Fluorite, impregnating also, in varying degrees, the altered granite of the rock box.
Close to the main work, they found in a vein of Fluorite, Gummite and Uranophane very altered Pitchblende nodules.
The autunite appears in veins and uranophane impregnations.
Various mineral pos failures affect the site which concerns us, which recognized the date extension is limited.
Much of the mineral provided by this mine comes from work performed open-air, with some underground short-haul.
The law of exploited minerals was increasing as the mine deepened, reaching an average of 0.60 - 0.70% U3O8.
