Note: Not to be confused with the Vermilion Mine in Fairbank Township [https://www.mindat.org/loc-10306.html].

Gold was discovered here in 1887 by Henry Ranger. The Vermilion mine was at first regarded as a gold mine, from the gold which was plentifully distributed in the gossan, and several thousand dollars worth (period value) was recovered.

It was in this gossan that Frank Sperry, a chemist of the Canadian Copper Company, made the first identification of the arsenide of platinum, which was named "sperrylite" after the discoverer. Both the gossan and the solid ore were found to contain palladium as well as platinum, and 198.28 tons of ore, obtained in 1902, carried 4 ounces (ca. 151 g) of palladium, 1.50 ounces (ca. 57 g) of platinum, 0.33 ounce (ca. 12 g) of gold, and 4 ounces (ca. 151 g) of silver per ton.

In 1888 a 12-meter shaft was sunk by Robert Tough and J. Stobie.
In 1898 three more shafts were sunk by the Canadian Copper Company.
In 1902 diamond drilling and extraction of ore was carried out.
In 1915 the original shaft was extended to 46 meters, with 44 meters of drifting and crosscutting on the 2nd level.
The mine closed in 1917.

Total recorded production was approx. 6,500 tons of unknown grade. Sometime in the 1980s the dumps were removed and run through INCO's mill in Sudbury.

The orebody consisted of small irregular, high-grade shoots or veins varying from a few centimeters to 40 centimeters in diameter, distributed irregularly in fractured mafic metavolcanics (greenstones, quartzite, and norite) and metasediments. The longest ore shoot encountered was 12 meters long by 5 meters wide.

Description: Pentlandite is very rare at the Vermilion Mine and occurs as 1-2mm thick stringers up to 1cm long in black biotite schist. It is also unusually silvery in color and does not show a parting. Violarite is the primary Ni mineral at the Vermilion whereas everywhere else in the Sudbury area pentlandite is and violarite is secondary.
