The Aggeneys base-metal deposits are located on the farms Aggeneys, Gams and Zuurwater, the nearest town is Pofadder 60 km to the east and the Orange River is 35 km to the north (Cairncross et al. 1995).

The Aggeneys-Gamsberg Ore District (A-GOD) hosts several clastic-dominated massive sulphide deposits with total supergiant resources of > 500 Mt of Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore, within the metasedimentary Hotson Formation. Although the predominantly synsedimentary ore deposits occur within a single prospective sedimentary formation, this formation has been intensely folded, duplicated, and disrupted, making exploration for blind mineralization especially challenging.
The A-GOD is host to several economic to sub-economic, sediment-hosted base metal sulphide deposits, including Swartberg (and its along-strike extension, Tank Hill), Broken Hill (and its down-plunge extension, Deeps), Big Syncline, and Gamsberg (with its easterly equivalent, Gamsberg East), with a total resource of > 500 Mt of Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag ore. These deposits are largely stratiform to stratabound, and were deposited by hydrothermal fluids as synsedimentary exhalites and subseafloor replacements at some time after ∼ 1285 Ma, but before the emplacement of cross-cutting aplite sills at ∼ 1175 Ma. The deposits are classified as metamorphosed Selwyn-type sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) or clastic-dominated Cu-Pb-Zn deposits.
Peak metamorphism in the A-GOD reached amphibolite-facies conditions, estimated at 630–670 °C and 4–6 kbar in metapelites of the Gams Member and amphibolites of the Koeris Formation in the Quarry Fold Nappe.
