The Summitville District is localized in a volcanic dome at the margin of the nested Summitville and Platoro calderas. The country rock is largely quartz latite. Mineral deposition occurred largely in fissure veins and acid-sulphate leached breccias. The geology and ore deposits are discussed in detail by Bethke, et al (2005). On a district wide basis multiple episodes of mining, exploration and mapping have provided a picture of most of the vertical extent of the hydrothermal plumbing system from porphyry stockwork mineralization at depth through shallow base metal-gold deposits to surficial siliceous sinter.

The initial mining in the district focused on base metal sulphide-barite veins that contained significant gold values. In the mid 1970's ASARCO did exploration in the district. Two deep drill holes intersected a quartz monzonite porphyry with very low grade stockwork copper-molybdenum mineralization. It also outlined the low grade gold orebody that was later mined by open pit.

During this phase of work in the district an equipment operator saw a yellow glint coming from a rock just off the side of the road. That rock weighed about 141 pounds, contains an estimated 350 ounces of gold and became known as "the gold boulder of Summitville". Its now in the Denver Museum of Natural History. The rock was a float boulder from one of the sulphide-barite veins and seems to have been hidden in plain sight for decades.

The low grade gold ore body was mined from 1986 - 1991.
