The world's largest open-pit gold mine. Reserves are 220 Mt grading at 1.4 g/t (5.6 Moz gold equivalent).

Host rocks are shales and carbonate rocks cut by a quartz stockwork. The mineralized zone is a metasomatic assemblage (diaphoresis) with biotite, orthoclase, albite, and quartz, grading into black banded biotite-graphite schists and into carbon-rich sandstones at the periphery. The deposit is related to a gold-bearing shear zone (thrust zone).
