The field is a magmatic–hydrothermal system in the Tonga (Tofua) arc.
The TA25 WVF is at depths of 966 - 1096 metres.

The caldera, which has a diameter of about 6.5 km, sits on a volcanic platform with basal dimensions of 17 × 14 km. The caldera lies at a 1500-m water depth and is surrounded by 600- to 900-m-high caldera walls.
