During the period 1969 and 1970, blasting occurred in the First Watchung basalt of Paterson and West Paterson, as Interstate highway 80 was being extended through the region. The construction area was immediately adjacent to the workings of the Lower New Street Quarry. Mineralization was found within the pillow formations of the basalt.
