Located near the village of North Groton, on the southeast flank of Bald Mountain.

Mined formica beginning in 1863, though not on a serious level until the Hartford Mining company worked it from 1878 to 1888.

Later it was a source ofberyl,feldspar, andquartz, too.

The mine first became known as the Palermo Mine in 1888 when it was purchased by the Palermo Mining Company of Schenectady, New York.

When General Electric owned and operated it from 1898 to 1945 it was known as the GE Mine, which producedmuscovite,microcline, andberyl.

The name reverted to Palermo Mine when the Ashley Mining Corp. leased it from GE from 1945 to 1958 and since then that name has remained.

It was owned by the Mountain Mining Company until 1973 and leased to N.E. Materials (Rex Howard, who mined thequartz core) and later Peter Samuelson.

Since 1973 it has been owned by the Palermo Mining Co. Ltd and operated almost solely for mineral specimens, including many rare phosphate species (Whitmore and Lawrence, 2004).

Fuller (1898) reported on a pocket at the mine which was said to be ten feet (3 m) in diameter.

Aquartz crystal, three feet (90 cm) in diameter, was taken from the roof of the pocket, according to the mine superintendent at the time.

85 m long, 42 m wide concordant in amicaquartz-sillimaniteschist.

Description: Foord et al. (1997) and Korzeb et al. (1997) made a determined effort to verify clarkeite from this locality and all specimens submitted to them did not contain clarkeite but were mixtures dominated by schoepite(Eugene Foord, personal communication, 1996). Previously, Frondel (1956) studied minerals from a wide variety of localities including many specimens from the Palermo #1 Pegmatite and he did not find clarkeite. Frondel(156) stated of clarkeite and its misidentifications: "Clarkeite is best identified by its X-ray powder pattern. It isindistinguishable (emphasis added) from the dark-brown types of oxidized uraninite..."

Description: Beraunite was originally defined as a fully oxidised mineral, but was redefined by Fanfani and Zanazzi (1967), on the basis of a crystal structural analysis, as a mixed-valence iron phosphate and they left the original fully oxidized end-member unnamed. In essence, Fanfani and Zanazzi (1967) had discovered a new mineral species (ferroberaunite) but re-used a previous name. In the 19th century, both beraunite and eleonorite had been applied to the fully oxidized mineral. Eleonorite had been re-applied by the IMA to the oxidized end-member of the beraunite-eleonorite series. In the IMA 21-D redefinition the name beraunite was reapplied to the oxidised phase and the name ferroberaunite was created for the mixed-valence phase (Tvrdy et al., 2021).
