Miniera di Valbona (Miniera di Zuc di Valbona)


Mine, active in the 1860s and operated by the company La Virginia, which exploited a polymetallic vein in the soutwestern slope of Zuc di Valbona.

The Valbona mineralization is mainly composed by argentiferous galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite (which locally represents the most diffused sulfide), argentiferous tetrahedrite, bournonite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The gangue consists of quartz and baryte with also diffused siderite. The secondary assemblage consists mainly of arsenates and hydrated sulfates of Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe, with subordinate carbonates, silicates and phosphates.
Strongly oxidized quartz-baryte blocks are observable at the base of Mount Zucco di Cam. These blocks are very rich of iron hydroxides and secondary minerals, mainly Pb-bearing arsenates. These mineralized blocks seem not to come from the remains of mining activity, but from a portion of the lode natural landslide in the past. In the area of the mine rests, the lode is characterized by the presence of white microcrystalline quartz, subordinate baryte and siderite, with common argentiferous galena, sphalerite, and minor nodules of chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrite and tetrahedrite.
