Complex covers 35 km² and lies on the axis of the Inland Kaikoura Range, with Mount Tapuaenuku reaching an elevation of 2885 m. The intrusion cuts Jurassic metagreywackes and has a radial dike swarm that extends into younger rocks. Eight intrusive untis are distinguished by Baker et al. (1994).
