PGM ores (mainly of Pd and Pt) are mined from the eastern portion of the J-M Reef. The deposit was discovered in the early 1970s; mining commenced in 1986. During 2003, the Stillwater Mine (owned by the Stillwater Mining Co.) produced approximately 428,000 ounces of palladium and platinum, compared to approximately 492,000 ounces in 2002 and approximately 504,000 ounces in 2001.
