Old Mn mine opened injasper.

The metasedimentary rocks at Varenche probably form part of the Combin Unit, a composite nappe made up ofcalc-schists, MORB-typemetabasalts andmetagabbros,serpentinites and pelagic (partly manganiferous) metasediments, which were metamorphosed atgreenschist facies conditions.

The highly oxidized Mn-rich rocks consist mainly of varicolouredspessartine-hematitequartzites andbraunite- andspessartine-bearing rocks, with variable proportions ofrhodochrosite, "crossite"-magnesioriebeckite,phlogopite,clinochlore,talc, Na-bearingpyroxene,rutile andbaryte, and uncommon minerals such asardennite,arseniopleite,manganberzeliite, andthortveitite.
