The Batesville manganese district includes approx. 100 square miles in northwestern Independence County,Sharp County, southeastern Izard County, and northeastern Stone County. It extends for 24 miles and is 4 to 8 miles wide. Four types of deposits were mined: manganiferous limestone, residual in situ clay, clay-talus residuum, and placer. Mines were active from 1849-1959.
