Mountain with operating open-pit siderite mine, the largest one in Central Europe. "Erzberg" means "ore mountain".

Ore production in 2001: ca. 1.6 Mt. Total ore production up to 2001: 235 Mt.
Ore production in 2020: ca. 3 Mt (https://www.vaerzberg.at/tagbau/).

The ore consists of a mixture of siderite and minor ankerite and Fe-bearing dolomite. The deposit is considered to be the biggest siderite deposit in the world. Mining started sometime during the period between 800 AC and the 12th century.
