Black Bird Mine


Iron-copper-cobalt-gold and rare earth element deposit, consisting of discontinuous veins and lenses in northeast- to northwest-trending shear zones that cluster within an area of 3 x 2 km in plan view. Most of the ore zones are stratabound and consist of mineralized biotite rock or silica rock layers that are interlayered with banded siltite of a Mesoproterozoic unit. The mineralized shear zones in the southern and eastern part of the mine field, however, crosscut the bedding of the metasedimentary strata. They trend in northern to northeastern directions, dip steeply and either host lenses, veins, veinlets and stringers (Uncle Sam and South Idaho ore zones) or consist of dike-like massive sulphide breccias (Dandy ore zone). In addition, discordant pipes and dikes of mineralized tourmaline breccias occur in the deposit area, and deformed strata are locally cut by steeply dipping mineralized quartz veins. Most ore zones are also cut by metamorphosed mafic dikes, which are abundant in the mine field but only few of them crop out at surface.

The Blackbird mine complex includes an open pit in the Blacktail ore zone and extensive underground workings on the Dandy, Idaho, Chicago and Brown Bear zones. Most of the individual mines and prospects are located within or close to the outcrop area of the banded siltite unit.
